Plans to convert an historic and currently vacant building on Buffalo’s West Side are ready to move into action, thanks in large part to a local architectural firm with an impressive record of bringing similar buildings back to life.

The City has given a green light to The Frizlen Group to begin rehabilitating an impressive structure located at 346 Connecticut St., known around the neighborhood as the “Horsefeathers” building. The building’s odd but familiar name originated with an antiques store that once occupied a portion of the five-story building.

Plans for the 114-year-old Horsefeathers building, according to Karl Frizlen, president of The Frizlen Group, include a local foodmakers’ market in the building’s basement and on the first-floor, and 18 loft-style apartments on the upper floors. The total cost of the project will be $4 million.

The newly named Horsefeathers Market & Residences will hold it first public event from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, when the future Horsefeathers Community Market celebrates National Food Day 2011. The event will feature food tasting, food trucks, guest speakers, informational tables, children’s activities, music and tours. Nutrition professionals will also be on hand to answer your questions and help make the connection between local foods, health and wellness.

Urban farming pioneers, local food producers, rooftop gardening experts and LEED-certified architects will explain the vision behind the Horsefeathers Community Market while you sample culinary delights, wine from the Niagara Escarpment, beer from the Black Rock neighborhood and more.

The award-winning Frizlen Group is quickly becoming recognized as the architectural firm of choice for innovative and green urban projects and historic restorations in the City of Buffalo. Among the firm’s impressive portfolio are properties at 257 Lafayette Ave., 448 and 504 Elmwood Ave., and 305 Utica St.
